Solace
by Ramona Davoudpour

This image, originally a photograph in the National Geographic, depicts a girl's face bordered by her father's hand holding her baby sibling.  The father's calloused hands portray the difficulties and weight of life on the girl's shoulders.  However, despite these hardships, there is a sense of security in her expression that she gains from the intimate relationship with her family.  I chose watercolor to create the feel of tranquility and solace, while the India ink creates dark sharp lines to symbolize the hardships in this culture/life.

Ramona is an alumna of USC.
